We run tests on all the products before we sell them. This can take a process of weeks or occasionally months, depending on the product.
There is a few reasons this might be the case.
1. Occasionally, Hemp Shop emails will file into a junk folder. Please check your email’s junk folder and adjust your settings accordingly.
2. Please log in to your account and check that the email address provided is correct. Also, under the ‘my orders’ tab it is possible to view all orders.

A license from the Home Office is required to grow Industrial Hemp in the UK.
In regard to planting seeds, as a general rule, one looks to plant 150-200 plants per square metre. There are roughly 75 seeds per gram of weight.
All marijuana / hash products are illegal in the UK. We do not sell any products containing more than 0.2% THC in them, as per European Law.
We do not sell any products containing more than 0.2% THC in them, as per European Law.
We recycle and reuse all our packaging. It is over 90% paper/cardboard reused. Occasionally however, for fabrics we must use plastic, but this is recycled also.
Please be aware that if oil spills through the pipette glass onto the bottle thread and you re seal the product, it can cause leaks to occur. Use appropriate material to wipe your bottle dry, if this occurs.
It is grown under organic farming methods in Lithuania.
Drawing on over 30 years of experience and feedback we do encourage people to include Hemp Seed Oil in their diet. Hemp seed oil is the single most complete source of nutrients in the entire plant kingdom – there are Super foods and then there is the SUPER food – Hemp. Hemp is the only complete food, from a single source, on the planet.
A range of icons throughout the site helps you make an instant and informed choice regarding the qualities of that product (and whether it is compatible with your particular lifestyle choice).
100% Organic – this is an organic product.
We’re all learning the importance of eating organic & leading more organic lifestyles. Hemp doesn’t require the use of herbicides or pesticides, and grows better organically anyway. So buying hemp means you’re looking after your body & always supporting the growth of organic farming, organic processing – and our environment. Cotton growth is responsible for anything up to 50% of global agricultural chemical use. Herbicides, pesticides, fertilisers – you name it, cotton is destroying natural habitats, ruining our rivers and seas, even poisoning ourselves. Hemp doesn’t require herbicides or pesticides to grow, uses a fifth of the water that cotton needs and provides a softer, stronger and more durable fabric. Enough said. |

Gluten-free – this product is gluten free and safe for Coeliacs.
Indigestion, low energy, allergic reaction, depression; all these can be attributed to the over use of high gluten ingredients in our foods. Hemp is naturally gluten free, and can be used to make highly nutritious alternatives to common foods, like pasta, bread and milk. As adaptable as the soya bean, but without the environmental drawbacks. With people being more conscious than ever before of what they consume and its effect on their health, hemp provides a healthy alternative to many standard food ingredients. Those ingredients, like gluten, can prove detrimental to our health. SPELT – some of our food range uses Spelt grain. Spelt is derived from an ancient wheat grain that has not been ruined by excessive over-breeding. It has a very low gluten content and research indicates that some people with gluten intolerances or allergies can tolerate spelt. |

Essential Fatty Acids
Essential Fatty Acids or EFAs are now considered to be amongst the Holy trinity of food stuffs essential for human health, namely Vitamins, Minerals and EFAs. Not all fats are bad for you, in fact there are fats that can heal and fats that kill. The dangerous fats are the Trans Fatty Acids – most often recognised on food labels as saturated fats. Hempseed has the highest amount of EFAs in the plant kingdom and in a format that is the most easily digestible for in the human body. EFAs are responsible for healthy skin, hair and nails – providing the very building blocks in the body. Hemp is not only super tasty but a real SUPER FOOD. |
|
100% Natural – this is a natural product.
Compare the quality, comfort, safety, taste, appearance, and – most importantly – environmental impact of any natural product when compared to its synthetic counterpart. With hemps’ incredible versatility, there’s always a natural alternative. When a food product from us states it is natural, it means that what you are getting is a 100% natural product, made without any synthetic ingredients at all. When other non-food products from our range state they are natural, this means it has made using as many naturally occurring components and the very minimum (less than 5%) of synthetic components (normally metal buttons or reactive dye). The production of synthetic plastics, fabrics, fuels and even foods, is taking its toll on our health and our environment. When there is always a natural alternative like this available, why choose anything else? For your sake as well as the planet’s. |
|
100% Vegan – this is a Vegan product.
That means that at no time during the growth, production or manufacture of this item were animal products used. For those of you who want to let all the animal inhabitants of this fine world of ours get on with and live a peaceful life. As the Vegan Society says “Promoting ways of living free from animal products for the benefit of people, animals and the environment.” Says it all. |

Colourfast
When we say colourfast, we mean colourfast. Many naturally made products and many other companies’ hemp garments lose their dye very quickly and sometimes it even bleeds onto your other clothes. Not so with garments from The Hemp Shop. We take special care to bring you quality hemp garments that will keep their dye longer than most cotton products. |
|
Reactive dye – this garment is reactive dyed.
There are three systems of dyeing. Totally synthetic, naturally and Reactive. Reactive uses 90% less chemicals than fully synthetic dyeing. Synthetic dyeing is one of the most polluting technologies in clothing manufacture. AZO’s, the fixing agent used in most commercial synthetic dyeing, makes up 95% of the chemicals used in the industry. Reactive dyeing, on the other hand, is designed to fix the dye at a set temperature. This negates the use of AZO’s – looking after the environment at the same time. |
|
Oxygen bleached – this garment is Oxygen bleached.
We always strive to use natural equivalents for all our processes. Oxygen bleaches are a very benign alternative to the normal and excessively polluting industrial bleaches preferred by 99% of the fashion world. Oxygen bleach still gives us the whiter shades the fashion world demands but without using harmful chemicals in the process. With Hemp paper you can do away with bleaching completely. Wood pulp paper requires vast amounts of bleach and is a major culprit in the destruction of eco-systems. |
|
Pre-shrunk
Unlike the hemp clothes of yesteryear, all our ranges are 100% pre-shrunk. That means when you wash them at the recommended temperature on the wash label (usually 40 degrees) they will reduce no more than the industry standard of less than 5% shrinkage. |
|
UV Safe
Hemp fabric – the oldest known fabric on the planet – is also the best at protecting you from those damaging Ultra Violet (UV) rays. Hemp provides an effective barrier against UV rays and being the softest natural fibre means your skin is really looked after. Why buy expensive synthetic so-called UV-ray blocking clothing when you can have your cake and eat it with hemp fabrics and clothes. |
|
Naturally-dyed
Completely natural ingredients have been used in this garment to give it its amazing colour, yet again showing that there’s a natural alternative to every one of man’s environmentally damaging inventions! And with hemp’s incredible absorbency, this colour is sure to last! |
|
Breathable
Hemp fibres make excellent thermo-dynamic and wicking fabrics. Gobbledegook- what does all that mean? Thermo-dynamic means that in a similar way to linen, hemp fabrics keep you warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot – they keep you at your naturally comfortable temperature. It does this by ‘breathing’. That’s where wicking comes in. Hemp fibres are porous so allow the heat to be trapped when it is needed and released when not. This method also makes it possible for the moisture coming off the body to be easily released (or ‘wicked’) out from the body and through and out of the fabric. Hemp fabric is perfect for any time of year. It always allows the skin to breathe, without ever compromising its incredible warmth, perfect for keeping snug in cold weather. And it draws moisture away from the skin, great for hot weather or sport! It also has its own anti-bacterial, deodorising properties. There’s nothing better to wear, whatever the weather. |

Eco World
Eco-balanced : we are striving to provide the convenience and comfort the modern consumer demands, whilst staying in balance with our environment and being eco-sustainable. With hemp’s infinite list of applications, we are succeeding! So keep buying hemp, keep loving your self, and keep loving your world! |
The seeds are not sterilised, this only takes place in North America, not the EU, so they may sprout.
Hemp Essential Oil is taken from the upper leaves and flowers of the Hemp plant and is extracted by low-pressure steam distillation. It is a truly holistic oil that works on both a physical and emotional level and offers a wide range of health enhancing benefits. It teems with the plant’s beneficial Terpenes. Hundreds of them. Terpenes are the compounds of the cannabis plant that protect it from predators and funguses. These compounds are distilled into the Hemp essence to provide a range of health benefits including anti-depressant, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory affects.
Although it comes from the Cannabis Sativa L. plant, hemp is not pot even though it is frequently confused with marijuana due to the similar leaf shape. It cannot be used as a drug because it produces virtually no THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive compound in Hemp essential oil contains less than 10ppm D9THC and conforms to all UK and EU regulations) so you’d have to smoke a joint the size of a telegraph pole to get high!
Myrcene is a compelling analgesic with a balsamic aroma. It contains anti-anxiety, anti-biotic and anti-inflammatory properties. Myrcene helps ensure less pain and better sleep.
Terpinolene is a fresh smelling, citrus-like Terpene with anti-anxiety properties. This Terpene is recognised for sedative effects – guaranteeing this essence is a perfect relaxation companion.
Beta Caryophyllene is an anti-inflammatory Terpene with a clove-like, spicy scent. It inhibits body parts from swelling (Edema) and is gastric-protective – helping to ease inflammation of the colon.
Alpha Pinene is an antimicrobial terpene with an earthy, woody-like fragrance. This terpene also exhibits bronchodilator properties, which increases airflow to the lungs. It is also an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor – which aids memory.
Alpha Humulene – anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, andanorectic (suppresses appetite),
Beta Pinene – local anti-septic, anti-inflammatory, bronchodilator
Limonene – anti-anxiety, anti-inflammatory, aids digestion

As you can see Hemp Essential Oil is used for protracted and chronic health problems and pains. However, The Hemp Shop Ltd is not qualified or accredited to offer medical advice. It is best to talk to a herbalist or an aromatherapist for advice on whether to use HEO.
This versatile essence is excellent for health and beauty products, cosmetics, perfumes, soaps, candles, and as an additive for foods. Many people heat it in an infuser or burner for the health giving aromas. You can put a few drops into your bath or add 3 – 5 drops to 10ml of a carrier oil like hemp seed oil or olive oil, for use as a massage oil.
Hemp Essential Oil is powerful and concentrated. Never apply it directly to skin (or hair), and never ingest it in its pure form.
Hemp Essential Oil contains only trace amounts of CBD. However, we have received feedback from many customers over the years telling us of its healing properties. As we know, there is much more to hemp than CBD!
CBD, short for Cannabidiol, is one of at least 113 active cannabinoids identified in the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids are powerful compounds that interact with the endocannabinoid system in our bodies.
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a valuable biological system for maintaining human health and function. Essentially it helps to keep the body in balance. The ECS is a whole network of receptors connect from your brain throughout the body, including the immune system, the pain signaling system, and the musculoskeletal system. Cannabinoids activate the receptors along the system to alter neurotransmitter releases in the brain, and as such, can influence bodily functions such as appetite, pain, memory, mood and anxiety.
The body does create its own cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids to help support this regulatory system, but CBD supplements help to keep the receptors working at their best. It is similar to how we use vitamin C to boost our immune system – CBD acts as a kick starter to help the functions of the body’s central regulatory system.
No. CBD products contain zero or trace amounts of the other main cannabinoid that can be found in cannabis, namely THC – this is the compound in Cannabis that leads to the psychoactive effects that are commonly associated with marijuana and can get you high. CBD products made from Industrial Hemp which legally has to have less than 0.3% THC and will therefore not have this effect.
While cannabis is classed as an illegal drug, cannabidiol (CBD), which is non-psychoactive, is classed as a food supplement by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) in the UK.

No. Hemp Seed oil comes from cold pressing the seed of the industrial hemp plant. This is a fantastically healthy oil full of Omega 3 and 6, but it does contain trace amounts of CBD.
The body can absorb CBD via different delivery systems. We outline the main ones below:
Tinctures
A tincture is the most common form of delivery for CBD products. It is easy to administer: a drop of oil under the tongue as per the recommendations of the manufacturer. It enters your bloodstream through the sublingual artery. Tinctures are highly concentrated, so only a few drops are necessary to feel the effects.
Capsules
For people used to a regular routine of taking supplements in a capsule form, these offer an advantage of no taste and smell and all one needs do is swallow with some water.
Topicals
Topical products are applied directly to one’s skin which absorbs the CBD.
Edibles
Taken orally, the CBD is absorbed via digestion – breaking down nutrients and circulate them around your body. One can get a dose by eating CBD-infused:
- Gummies
- chocolate
- Tea
There are many symptoms, ailments and conditions for which people use CBD, including but not limited to:
– General wellness & mood boosts
– Natural beauty, skin & health conditions such as acne or eczema.
– Anxiety
– Insomnia
– Nausea
– Exercise & sport recovery – used as an anti-inflammatory
– Chronic medical ailments such as Multiple Sclerosis, Epilepsy, Parkinson’s Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Arthritis, and Cancer.
- Antiemetic (reduces nausea and vomiting)
- Anticonvulsant (suppresses seizures)
- Anti-inflammatory (mitigates inflammatory disorders)
- Antitumoral (fights tumor and cancer cells)
- Anxiolytic (Combats anxiety and depression)
- Antioxidant (tempers neurodegenerative disorders)
- Antipsychotic (mediates psychotic disorders)
CBD is a low-risk substance to ingest. It is worth everyone’s time and effort to find an optimal dose.
If you are new to CBD, it is important to record your experience. This is because dosage is unique to everyone. A dose that is effective for one person may not be effective for another. There are varying factors which result in desired effects and medical benefits. One needs to experiment to find what works.
Prior to taking CBD, consider the following factors
– Weight
– Diet & Metabolism
– Requirements & expectations – is the CBD for general wellness or is it for a specific ailment?
– Tolerance
Record your CBD intake. Did you eat before, during or after taking CBD? How did you feel before and after? Did anything else take place which could have affected the experience?
Take each dose for at least three days before altering, so your body has time to react. If you encounter any undesired effect, then decrease the dose.
For people with an ailment, increase the dosage until you achieve the desired effect. Increase or reduce the dosage as required until you experience relief from your symptoms.
Always check the manufacturers recommendations for maximum CBD intake in any 24-hour period.
There are different methods to extract CBD from a cannabis plant. It is important to The Hemp Shop to engage with the most ecofriendly and the purest method of extraction. The gold standard of these is the CO2 extraction method which uses a fluid state of Carbon Dioxide as a solvent. This unique method can produce a pure and clean extract containing not only CBD, but also the full spectrum of powerful substances naturally occurring in hemp – and this is possible without the need for solvents or chemicals that could remain in the final product. We are happy to announce all the CBD products we stock are CO2 extraction.
a) CO2 is a natural product
b) CO2 is nontoxic
c) the extraction process does not contribute to any carbon emission increases
d) CO2 extraction does not bring any flammable petroleum-based solvents (such as butane) into contact with one’s medicine.
e) It encourages the entourage effect of the plant.
Whole plant hemp extract keeps the full properties of the hemp plant intact. There are extra medicinal benefits to be had when the whole plant is used as a medicine, rather than only extracting the CBD. This is known as the entourage effect.
In addition to cannabinoids, the full plant extract includes terpenes, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, phytonutrients and any other materials that are extracted from the hemp plant.
Science indicates plant components interact with one another to create an enhanced effect, improving absorption and effects in the body for a sum greater than its individual parts.
In November 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO) published CBD as safe and well tolerated in humans, and not associated with any negative public health effects (WHO: Expert Committee on Drug Dependence).
In 2017, the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare product’s Regulatory Agency (MHRA) classified CBD as a medicinal ingredient.
In the USA, it is close to approval by the FDA as a medicine.
If you wish to reduce your intake of pharmaceutical drugs, then perhaps a CBD product is exactly what you need.
It is a good idea to refer to a doctor before taking any substance for medicinal purposes. A doctor can provide clinical information for an ailment and offer advice accordingly. We have heard of a number of doctors recommending CBD products to their patients, so it seems that it is becoming increasingly well known within the medical establishment.
Strictly speaking, side effects are those which impact food intake, heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure. CBD affects none of these (regarding ‘food intake’ – that is down to CBD reducing nausea).
At high doses of CBD one can experience drowsiness. However, if you are taking CBD for insomnia, then this is an effect not a side effect.
CBD may affect other medications one might be taking, due to the fact it inhibits liver enzymes from metabolizing drugs. Therefore, one should check with a doctor about any possible conflict of medications.
A certificate of analysis is produced when the product is tested by a lab. This shows the amount of CBD in the product and can also show any terpenes that are present. CBD products are also tested to ensure they do not contain any heavy metals. The Hemp Shop only stocks products where a Certificate of Analysis is available. To view this, visit the relevant product page.
Some of the language used around CBD products can seem quite confusing. We’ve tried to de-code some of them here:
Milligram servings
CBD by the Milligram is the best way to keep track of one’s CBD intake.
CBD %
This is the amount of a CBD ingredient within the total ingredients of the CBD product (i.e the carrier oil is another ingredient).
CBD Plant Extract %
In a full plant extract, this is the % of that extract which is CBD.
The Hemp Shop sells products that are produced by other companies. We therefore rely entirely on their ability to provide us with samples to pass on to the consumer. If there are samples of the product you require, we can send them out. Presently, no manufacturers offer us samples.
As we are not medical practitioners we cannot offer advice for your ailment. However, based upon twenty years of customer feedback we know many people choose a combination of Hemp products for conditions such as eczema. The most common combination seems to be including Hempseed oil into ones diet – which over time we are told helps to reduces flare ups, and for the short and medium term there are hemp based skin care products which again, we are told work great.
Examples of such products can be found here on our site.
Due to the individual requirements each customer has, we are unable to offer exact advice on our range of fabrics – it is such a personal choice. We recommend getting one of our swatch pieces, so you can see, feel and handle them yourself to help you make a decision.
We always recommend checking with a new swatch before ordering, as the minimal treatment and organic cultivation methods may result in subtle changes in the hemp fibres, from batch to batch. Please note, that once sent, all cut fabrics are non-refundable so please order a swatch if uncertain.
You can find details on the fabric swatch and how to get hold of one – here
On a fabric product page, if you see the abbreviation ‘PFD’ – it means ‘prepared for dyeing’. Our fabrics associated with this term are pre washed to 30 degrees.
However, we always recommend washing fabric at the desired temperature first, before creating any item.
The bulk of our fabrics are made in China, with others coming from Europe.
Both the Chinese & EU fabrics are mainly produced under the GOTS organic scheme.
Why Romania?
Historically, Romanian people have traditionally grown hemp for its fibre. In some Romanian regions, the old traditional ways of growing and processing hemp within the household have remained unchanged until today. Our fibres from Romania are spun, milled, woven, dyed and finished without toxic chemicals (often with no chemicals at all) and without using huge amounts of fresh water. The mill produces the Hemp fabrics from organic yarn, which, although not certified, is grown/cultivated, produced and spun, organically.
Why China?
Hemp first grew on planet earth in China. Our Chinese fabric begins life in small farms in Shanxi, a farming region in northern China. The climate and soil of the region offer the ideal environment for hemp to grow successfully and this, together with the expertise long passed down through the generations, makes it an economically viable plant for even the smallest of farms to grow – especially because hemp requires very little additional help – it just grows!
Although the demand for hemp is constantly increasing, its demonisation alongside marijuana in the US and Western Europe which resulted in a ban on planting the crop has meant that its growth has been slow and its reach much smaller than cotton. This is also why our hemp is sourced from lots of small farms. While it is great to support these farmers it does make it difficult to certify to an organic standard: organic certification is not economically viable for these family-run farms. This is unlike the organic cotton yarns that are found in some of our Hemp and Cotton blended fabrics, which is certified.
As you can imagine, we get a large amount of requests for student discounts and sponsorships. Unfortunately as a small family business, we do not have the ability to sponsor the very many requests that we get from fashion students. However we do offer some discounts and special offers for students;
1. For your first order, up to a value of £150, we can offer the 100m+ discount on our prices (usually 20%). For a second order, up to a value of £150, we can offer a 10% discount. You will need to email us a picture of your student card.
2. We can offer a bargain bag of off-cuts from large pieces to small bits, taken from our fabrics and samples and swatches and off-cuts from the previous years of manufacture. We offer this at a very reasonable price – for only £10 we will send you a selection of all of these bits, a total of 1.5kg of fabric, that you will be able to use in many different ways.
If you would like to receive this, please contact us and we will get the order processed and sent out.
All we ask in return is that you do reviews of the fabrics you use, on our website. Your offer to put our company logo and information on your show is gratefully received. Tagging us in your Instagram posts is always greatly appreciated (@thehempshop). We look forward to seeing the images of your finished garments.
You can also find details on the fabric swatches and how to get hold of one through this link.
All our measurements use the metric system, unless specifically stated otherwise.
We sell the fabrics by the metre and each fabric has a slightly different width.
Whenever possible, we sell the fabric in one continuous length, so if you put 7 in your basket, you will get 7 metres in one continuous piece. However, for orders well above 10mtrs, occasionally we send fabrics in 2 pieces.
Please always let us know if you need the fabric one one continual length.
The reason for shorter lengths can be that the supplier sends us the fabric on rolls which are short lengths. The fabric may be near the end of what we have in stock. Or there are simply only short lengths available.
There are 3 different types of dyes commercially available right now.
We use – Fibre Reactive dyes, the eco choice. It uses 95% less dangerous chemicals than standard dyes and offers a deeper colour and a longer lasting one.
The 3 main dyes are – Standard AZO dyes, Reactive dyes and Natural plant dyes.
Standard dyes also known as AZO dyes, are one of the most polluting technologies on the planet today. We avoid these as much as possible.
Natural plant dyes can only be naturally fixed to the fabric on dark colours, brown, grey or black. For the lighter colours, a heavy metal ‘fixer’ or mordant would be required, rendering it non-eco-friendly – alternatively the garment must be dry cleaned, once again, not eco-friendly. We use natural dyes in certain circumstances, but as dry cleaning is itself a polluting technology, we only use them for specialist garments.
Fibre-Reactive Dyes – We dye all clothes with eco-friendly fibre-reactive dyes. These dyes are a good example of how superior quality materials are often more ecological. These dyes are both the best quality and most environmentally-sound man-made dyes available.
Reactive colours are brighter and richer, and they provide excellent colour fast properties. These characteristics are due to their fibre reactivity, a process in which the dye molecules bond directly with the fibre molecules. Because the bonding of the dye and the fibre is so strong and complete, very little residual dye comes out into the waste water when they are dyed or later into the wash water when they are used by the customer. The Swiss laboratories of Bezema developed these dyes, always keeping high environmental standards in mind. They contain no heavy metals or other known toxic substances, and they meet all European Union criteria for being an eco-friendly pigment. Many years ago, The Hemp Shop was able to start using these dyes full-scale after working for several years to develop an effective system for dyeing with fibre-reactives. It is significantly more difficult and expensive to dye with reactive than with conventional direct dyes, but the benefits both in terms of quality and ecology make it well worthwhile. When we first started using the Dylon dyes, our boss was told by Dylon, that if a Goldfish could actually survive being tumbled around in a washing machine, that the Dylon dye inside the water in that machine, would not harm it at all.
For more information on fibre reactive dyes, read our blog here.
1. Minimum labour standards Working hours: 8 hours per day. From 8am to 11am then 1pm to 6pm. Wage: In comparison to the average standard wages in the province according to Chinese government’s figures, the wages paid at the mill are between 52% & 104% higher. No use of child labour or forced labour. No discrimination or harassment. We have assurances according to the Chinese labour law. And the mill also organises sporting activities for the workers.
2. Adding value, fair trade and sustainable livelihoods The mill emphasis is on the environmental protection and energy saving for hemp production; also looking for new methods to save time and lessen the waste. The mill is the pioneer in this industry, both a leader of hemp fabrics in China & the world as well.
3. Environmental standards. Almost all of our Chinese fabrics are organic, with the Hemp sourced from China and the cotton from Turkey. The mill we work with is the leader in the hemp field, they also work as a research institute for hemp, and they follow the environment protection law of China for production. The Organic Cotton in almost every fabric we sell from the Chinese mills is GOTS & OEKO-TEX Standard 100 approved, with the finished yarns being OCS certified. The Hemp is grown organically (being so easy to grow organically) but is not currently certified as the hemp is grown on hundreds of small farms and those individual farmers cannot afford the certification process. For our European fabrics, the Hemp comes from Hungary and is farmed organically but due to the current cost for testing each and every field (most of the fibre comes from farming collectives) it is too expensive for the farmers to pay for the actual certification.
Hemp fabrics are not naturally waterproof, at least not to a modern standard. However, if you get the angle right, due to the tight weave in a Hemp Canvas fabric and that the fibre itself swells and thereby creates a block to the rain coming in, you can keep dry underneath. Just like the hemp fabrics that covered the wagons that went west across the USA, or the tents that kept the troops dry in any engagement over the last 1000 years or indeed the very best examples are where hemp was used as the sealant of choice for plumbing the world over until PTFE tape was created and that all hoses used for fire-engines and in offices/hotels were made from hemp. So, there is a way of keeping dry with just natural hemp fabric, but for a more modern waterproofing standard you’ll need to apply a waterproofing treatment to it.
If you’re looking for more information, and advice on the best ways to waterproof hemp fabric then find out more on our blog here.
Chinese Fabrics
1) Once the plants have been cut, the stalks of hemp plants are usually laid out along the ground for some days so that retting can occur.
2) Then put the stalks in water tanks , enzymatic means with which to speed up the process of retting. ( No chemicals)
3) Decorticating–removal of the central woody core from the stem. This step can be preformed immediately after retting.
4) Removal of Lignin through enzymatic & microbial means. (No chemicals)
5) Once the hemp fibres have been separated, they are formed into bales after drying and washing to spin yarn.
European/Romanian Fabrics
Our European fabrics are retted in much the same way as the Chinese fabrics, and are mechanically processed with a chemical-free, environmentally-sound technology.
This natural processing preserves the innate integrity of hemp fibre with its long molecular structure and inherent strength and durability. It is accomplished with a series of increasingly fine mechanical combings done in two stages known as scutching and hackling, the traditional methods used for hemp processing in Eastern Europe.
Did you know that Hemp fabric is naturally thermo-dynamic, meaning it keeps you warm when you’re cold and cold when you’re warm – it wicks away moisture from the skin quickly and its anti-bacterial qualities keep you fresh all day. Perfect for hypo-allogenic and sensitive skin, it also blocks up to 95% of UV Rays.
Listed on each product page, it is possible to view the sizes (cm) alongside full product information.

Sadly Hemp Tailor (formerly Hoodlamb) have now ceased trading as of mid-2020.
If your belt buckle or end cap needs repair after the refund period has expired, there is usually a very easy method to do a good repair on it yourself.
The belt buckle is designed to be removed easily, so that you can change to your own buckle should you wish.
If it’s the end cap that is giving you trouble, simply prise the end cap open and re-adjust it, then firmly press it closed again.
If your buckle is misbehaving, then you can usually reattach it yourself by opening up the teeth mechanism that attaches the buckle to the belt webbing, reattach the buckle to the belt in a position you are satisfied with, and close the teeth mechanism firmly on to the belt.
If none of the above works, and it is within 6 months of the date you bought the item, you can send it back to us and we will fix it for you. Get in touch and we will sort out a returns label for you.
Yes, on many of our clothing items you are able to select a “bespoke dye” option and choose your favourite colour from our colour chart.
If bespoke dye is available, you will see the option on the product page. Tick the “bespoke dye” box and an extra charge will be added to the cost of your item. Consult the colour chart, and fill in the comments box at checkout with the colour that you desire.
Next day delivery is not available for bespoke items, due to the time it takes to dye the items, dry them and package them up for you.
Hemp fabric has long been known for its strength and endurance; it is at least 3 times stronger (greater tensile strength than cotton and much more durable too). When choosing a bag or luggage what do you need? Strength and endurance! When you add style and practicality into the mix, we think you’ll find we’ve got it in the bag!
Many of these bags are completely biodegradable. This is with the exception of the zippers etc, but even most of these are made with recycled metal.
Did you know that Hemp ropes float? Used for generations as the rope of choice because it was stronger and more rot resistant and kinder on the hands than all other natural fibre ropes. They are suitable for all uses, practical & decorative, both indoor & out, handrails, rope swings etc.
Yes. We stock a large variety of twines and ropes. For details of the samples you require, please follow this link.

Where available, we sell by the metre.
We sell high strength, bio-degradable, un-waxed, coarse, 100% hemp gardening twine. But of course, all the twines can be used as gardening twine.
Pure Organic Hemp Braided Cord (just like Sash cord) is a fantastic product with many uses.
Great for Macramé, jewellery and bracelets, interiors & upholstery and of course as the strongest Sash cord around.
